Safer Internet Day – 7th February – arrange an event

Safer Internet Day (SID) is an annual event to promote the safe and responsible use of technology among children and young people. The focus of SID 2012 is ‘connecting generations’. It aims to encourage families to explore online technologies together.

  • Half of parents (48%) with children aged 5-15 who use the internet at home think they know less about the internet than their children do – this rises to 70% of parents of 12-15 year olds.
  • Three in ten parents of 5-15s (30%) who use the internet at home are very or fairly concerned that their child may be giving out personal details to inappropriate people, with concern increasing with the age of the child.
  • 77 % of parents of children aged 5-11 and 81 % of parents of children aged 12-17 think that they know what their child does online; however, 33 % of children aged 12-17 claim that their parents do not know what they do online.

As the national centre for protecting children, the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) have launched a series of materials to assist with motivating parents and carers in to taking an active role in their child’s online life.

You can get involved in Safer Internet Day, for example, by running an event at your school or local ICT suite.

  • Share the trailer – from 30th January the trailer will be available to download and share. The trailer highlights the importance of being a good digital parent and pro-motes ‘CEOP’s Parents’ and Carers’ Guide to the Internet’.
  • Get young people involved – use CEOP’s ‘Back to the Future’ activities with the children and young people you work with to encourage them to talk about their online activities with their family.
  • Run an event – supporting materials for your event will be available in the ‘Trainer Delivery Pack’ from 30th January including a fully scripted presentation. The Guide video will be available to stream live on www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents from 7th February. It will also be available to download from www.thinkuknow.co.uk/teachers.
  • Interact with the CEOP team – they will be available to interact with live on 7th February from 6 – 9pm. View the Guide with your audience and then encourage them to tell us about the challenges families face as their children grow up online by posting on the ClickCEOP Facebook fan page, contacting us on Twitter @ceopuk or by tweeting #parentsguide.
  • Signpost the website – www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents direct parents and carers here for further information and advice. Those who are unable to attend a local event will also be able to view ‘CEOP’s Parents’ and Carers’ Guide to the Internet’ here.
